Photographer: Peter Perren - Healy Meadow
The Perren name is well known in Alberta’s Bow Valley. A local through and through, a younger Peter Perren anticipated a long and interesting career following in his father’s footsteps as a mountain guide and Parks Canada Warden. However a 2,000 foot fall cushioned by a wet snow avalanche on a Parks Canada training climb on the east ridge of Mount Logan in 1980 ended that dream and lead to a career as a lawyer. Peter has now practiced law for over 30 years in the Bow Valley and continues to enjoy a work life balance in the mountains, one that has seen him follow the 20 cm rule and close his office on Fridays. (If you are unfamiliar with the 20 cm rule please call Peter)
A born and raised Calgarian, Don Blackett was a member of the first graduating class of the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law, and has practiced law for 38 years, mostly in Calgary before relocating to Canmore and establishing his own general practice in 2014. Don is an avid cyclist, outdoorsman and seasoned traveller. When not enjoying adventures in Canmore, Don can be found on the Ciclovías in Mexico and Europe.
Peter and Don are very pleased to have formed a strategic alliance between their firms in order to better serve their clients and the community. While maintaining our independent law practices, we will work collaboratively with each other on client matters, and will continue to provide responsive, experienced and cost effective legal services to Canmore and the Bow Valley, Canada's Western Provinces and our global clientele.

By way of a brief background, I am also a born and raised Calgarian (there are two of us in the office, which is very unusual). I had a very satisfying childhood, attending excellent public schools, and enjoying much sport and recreation, including hockey, football, soccer, track, and extensive biking, hiking and skiing in the nearby Rocky Mountains. In 1976, I was fortunate to be admitted into the first ever class of the fledgling University of Calgary Faculty of Law, and possibly even more fortunate to survive those three years and graduate with an LLB in 1979. I then embarked on a legal career in Calgary, working for the likes of Code Hunter, McCarthy Tetrault, Baker & McKenzie and SNC-Lavalin Inc. Over those years, my practice involved a wide variety of disciplines, experiences and international travels.
But the Rockies kept calling, and in January 2014, I realized my long-time dream of living and working in my beloved mountains. Having moved to Canmore full time a few years earlier with my lovely wife, Sandy, I was proud to establish Blackett Law, initially as a sole practitioner. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of having lawyers Sarah Phillips and Janet Nystedt, and paralegal Jennifer Prince join me, and together we have in relatively short order built a busy little general corporate/commercial/real estate practice, serving Canmore, Banff, and points beyond. Concurrently with the launch of this new website, Blackett Law is very excited to be joining local legend Peter Perren in association as Perren Blackett Law, and with a larger group of now four lawyers and one paralegal, we are confident in our ability to provide very experienced, timely and cost effective legal services to the local community.
Peter is still trying to find himself in life and his bio will follow once he does.
I was born and raised in Calgary. Growing up, I had the good fortune to participate in various recreational activities, including equine pursuits (three-day eventing, and later focusing on dressage), and downhill skiing. When it was time for me to select a career path, as for many people who grew up in the city, the oil and gas sector beckoned. I pursued my undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business, obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Petroleum Land Management. From 2006 until my admission as a law student in 2013, I worked as a negotiator at a major Canadian oil and gas company. My tenure in the energy sector gave me valuable experience drafting contracts and working with stakeholders to negotiate agreements across a spectrum of transactions in terms of size, complexity and asset value. During my time in the oilpatch, I worked on deals ranging from single-wellbore agreements to dispositions with transaction values up to $0.5BN.
Sometime after I became responsible for financing my own recreation, I came to the conclusion that I ought to pursue activities that would not cost me money while I was sleeping. I bid the horses farewell and discovered mountain biking. Recreating in the mountains became a major part of my life, and like so many before me, I made what was supposed to be a six-month move to the Bow Valley in 2009. Following a stint commuting to the city for work, I decided to leave the city lights behind, personally and professionally. I was accepted to the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and graduated in 2016. Upon graduation, I articled with Blackett Law, and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2017. Though I originally came here for the recreation, the allure of small town living and the warmth of this community (and meeting a certain charming Frenchman) solidified my decision to put down roots in Canmore.
I am pleased to serve the local community’s legal needs and consider myself very fortunate to live and work in such a vibrant and picturesque setting. Together with my husband Sylvain, I enjoy mountain biking and backcountry skiing in the Bow Valley and beyond. You may encounter me in the community piloting local seniors in one of the Town of Canmore trishaws as part of the local Cycling Without Age program, or on a group ride with the lovely ladies of Canmore Cycling Culture.
I am a lawyer, a teacher and business owner. I love this community and the people that make it a home for me and my family. I also know how difficult it can be to run a business - the stress, the anxiety and how many mistakes we make. While we learn from those mistakes, my legal, business and practical experience can help your business operate efficiently and avoid risk.
For business owners, I provide a suite of corporate, commercial, transaction and human resources legal services. I help navigate corporate and workforce unrest. One of my more unique offerings is a "behind the scenes" HR department service - if your business cannot afford a dedicated human resources professional, it likely can afford our services to build your HR practices and policies, advise on implementation and teach those who will be the face of HR for your team.
For non profit businesses, you have my heart. Communities succeed on the strength and the contributions of their people. Non profits will appreciate our competitive pricing, as much as you will come to rely upon our guidance in governance matters - including bylaw revision, committee work, policy development, corporate compliance, and efficient Board of Directors management.
I also understand people and life (as much as anyone does!) I have navigated many of life's joys and tragedies, and I bring that experience and empathy to the personal legal services that we offer to clients. I very much enjoying helping with residential real estate, and estate planning and administration.
Since 2008 I have had the honour of practicing with wonderful colleagues in a national law firm, a boutique law firm, my own firm and as legal counsel to a public company with operations from coast to coast. Saving the best for last, working with my Perren Blackett colleagues, I bring depth and breadth of legal, business and personal experience to my clients and my community. I look forward to working with you.
World's Best Paralegal (in our view!)
I have been blessed enough to call Canmore “home” for over 20 years - when I moved to Canmore in 1994, there was only 1 traffic light!
I grew up on a farm in North Buxton, Ontario where my family still lives. After graduating from college in Toronto, I heard the mountains call and moved to Banff with the intention of staying for a (one) summer while I enjoyed the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies. I ended up staying a lot longer and worked in the hospitality industry for 15 years in various roles and locations – all of which taught me how to pursue my passion of helping people. I decided to make a career change and chose to work with a few other local lawyers before finding my true fit at Blackett Law. My speciality lies in real estate – both in Alberta and BC. I understand that buying or selling a home can be one of life’s biggest decisions, and sometimes stressful! I enjoy helping people navigate the hurdles and facilitate the process to ensure a smooth journey.
In addition to working for Perren Blackett Law, I enjoy volunteering for several Canmore organizations and helping the community I love flourish. I can often be found in the back country on winter weekends snowshoeing. During the summer months, my leisure time can find me camping, boating, fishing or hiking some of the amazing trails in the area.
